The Board of Finance, which consists of six members elected at large to serve staggering terms, is the budget making authority of the Town with the following responsibilities:

  • No less than annually analyze and report on the long-range financial plan and debt management for the Town;
  • Annually designate an independent public accountant to audit the accounts of the Town as required by Connecticut General Statutes;
  • have access to the records and accounts of the Boards of Selectmen and Education, respectively;
  • Receive proposed annual budgets from the Boards of Selectmen and Education respectively and conduct a public hearing on said proposals; prepare a Recommended Budget and submit said budget for adoption at the Annual Budget Meeting;
  • Following approval of the budget and completion of the Grand List, lay a tax on the Grand List sufficient to pay the expenses of appropriations of the Town for the ensuing year;
  • Make and approve special appropriations up to $50,000 from surplus or the Contingency Fund in accordance with Town Charter; and
  • Approve the acceptance of any grant of funds or materials and authorization to expend such grant funds or use of materials up to $99,999.99.
