1. Are there tax benefits for the elderly?

Homeowners – The Town administers a state-sponsored program for tax relief for elderly or totally disabled homeowners. Benefits are determined based on an individual’s income. Currently benefits are available to individuals whose income from all sources is less than $28,800 and married couples with income less than $35,300. The filing period for the benefits is February 1 – May 15 of each year.

Renters – The Town administers a state-sponsored program for elderly or totally disabled renters. Benefits are determined based on an individual’s income and expenses for rent and utilities. Currently benefits are available to individuals whose income from all sources is less than $28,800 and married couples with income less than $35,300. The filing period for those benefits is May 15 – September 15 of each year.

2. Are there any tax benefits for veterans?

A veteran’s benefit is available for individuals who served during a wartime period. To qualify the veteran needs to have his DD214 on file with the Town Clerk and have served during a prescribed time. These dates are available from the Assessor’s Office. The basic benefit is a reduction of $1,500 off one’s assessment.
