Birth Certificates

Copies of birth certificates are on file in the Town Clerk's office in the Town of Occurrence and in the Residence Town of the mother at the time of the birth.  You may obtain a certified copy at the Town of Occurrence or Town of Residence.  The fee is $10.00 per certified (raised seal) copy for either a full size or wallet size copy.  Birth records less than 100 years old are confidential.  Connecticut General Statutes Sections 7-51 and 7-51a allows access to birth records only to the individual (if over 18 years old); parent; grandparent; legal guardian; spouse; children (if child is 18 or older); grandchild (if grandchild is 18 or older); attorneys and title examiners representing the person or such person's parents, guardian, child or surviving spouse; persons authorized by court order; and agent's of a state or federal agency as approved by the Department of Public Health. 

To obtain an application for a certified copy of a birth certificate click here. Identification must be included with your request.  A copy of your current drivers license or other photo ID must be included.  If a photo ID is not available, originals or photocopies of two of the following documents may be used:  Social Security card, written verification of ID from employer (on letterhead), automobile registration, copy of a utility bill showing name/address, checking account deposit slip stating name/address and voting card.

Marriage Licenses

Individuals getting married in Connecticut must obtain their marriage license no more than 65 days before the wedding date.  A license to be married may be obtained from the Town Clerk's office in either the bride or groom's Connecticut residence or in the town in which the marriage is to take place.  Although they don't have to appear at the same time, both the bride and groom must appear in person before the Town Clerk to obtain a license.  The fee for a marriage license is $30. Payment must be submitted at the time the marriage license is issued.  You will need to complete the marriage license worksheet, provide identification and make a sworn statement that the information that you provide is true. You no longer need to have a blood test to obtain a marriage license in Connecticut.  Once the marriage ceremony takes place, the marriage officiator will submit the license to the registrar of vital records of the town where the marriage took place. The registrar will then register the license and place it on file for permanent record. Once registered, the marriage license becomes a vital record and is referred to as a Marriage Certificate.

Civil Union Licenses

Individuals entering into a Civil Union in Connecticut must obtain their Civil Union license no more than 65 days before the date of the ceremony.  A Civil Union license may be obtained from the Town Clerk's office in either party's Connecticut residence or in the town in which the ceremony is to take place.  Although they don't have to appear at the same time, both participants must appear in person before the Town Clerk to obtain a license.  The fee for a Civil Union license is $30. Payment must be submitted at the time the license is issued.  You will need to complete the Civil Union license worksheet, provide identification and make a sworn statement that the information that you provide is true.  Once the ceremony takes place, the officiator will submit the Civil Union license to the registrar of vital records of the town where the ceremony took place. The registrar will then register the license and place it on file for permanent record. Once registered, the license becomes a vital record and is referred to as a Civil Union Certificate.

Death Certificates

Copies of Death Certificates are on file in the Town Clerk's office where an individual died and the Town Clerk's office where an individual resided at the time of death.  In accordance with Connecticut General Statute 7-51a, for any death occurring after July 1, 1997, only the parties specified on the death certificate, such as informant, licensed funeral director, licensed embalmer, conservator, surviving spouse, physician, town clerk , registrar, or other person authorized by the Department of Public Health, shall be issued a certified copy of a death certificate containing the social security number of the decedent.  All other requesters will receive a certified copy of the death certificate without the social security number.  The fee is $10.00 per certified copy.  To obtain an application for a certified (raised seal) copy of a death certificate click here
