   DOWD AVENUE SEWER REPLACEMENT PROJECT
(see updates listed at the bottom of the page)

The Canton Water Pollution Control Facility's 2005 Sewer system Planning study identified a number of significant sources of infiltration along the existing sewer in Dowd Avenue. In addition the existing Sewage Pumping Station located on Route 44 originally constructed in 1974 was determined to be in need of major repair or replacement. Further evaluation indicated that the existing pump station could be eliminated and sources of infiltration corrected through the replacement of the existing sewer line with a new sewer placed at a shallower slope.

The benefits of the project include the following:

1) Reduced capitol, operations and maintenance cost through elimination of an antiqued pump station.

2) Reduction in WPCF operating cost

3) Increase in available capacity through infiltration reduction

4) Increased useful design of the Dowd Avenue sewer

This project will include the replacement of approximately 2100 linear feet of existing gravity sewer on Dowd Avenue, Canton Green Road and Route 44, and the elimination of an antiquated sewage pumping station located to the north of Route 44 just west of the Dowd Avenue Intersection. The majority of the work will take place along Dowd Avenue, from Route 44 westerly to the area of Commerce Drive. All pipeline replacement work will take place within existing paved roadways and the disturbed areas will be restored to match existing conditions.

This project is being funded by the State of Conn Department of Environmental Protection's Clean Water Fund with a 20 year loan at 2% interest. The loan is being repaid through the sewer use fees and supplemented by the WPCA's Sewer Assessment fund.

The Town of Canton Water Pollution Control Authority has awarded the Dowd Avenue Sewer Replacement Project to Ludlow Construction. This sewer replacement project is scheduled to begin May 19, 2008, with construction expected to end in Fall of 2008.

The project involves replacement of the sanitary sewer line from the intersection of Dowd Avenue and Commerce Drive to Canton Green and then across Route 44 resulting in the elimination of the existing sanitary sewage pump station located in front of the Bank of America.

Tighe and Bond Consulting Engineers of Westfield Mass will be overseeing the construction and will have a resident engineer on site daily. Construction will be conducted weekdays from 7am until 4 pm during which time through traffic will be prohibited on the Dowd Avenue and Maple Avenue corridor.

The detour route will be clearly marked and consists of utilizing Route 44 and Rt 179 to travel around the construction zone. No local residential streets will be part of the detour route.

Please direct all questions, concerns and comments to WPCF Superintendent E.Arthur Enderle III at aenderle@townofcantonct.org. All requests will then be forwarded to the proper parties. Please visit the Town of Canton Website where you will find updates and information relating to the project. Thank you for your cooperation in this project.
